A map only your family can read.

Share your location, messages and SOS alerts with the people you choose. Your phone locks everything before it is sent. We store it, but we can’t open it.

In testing. New sign-ups are paused, and the apps are not in the App Store or Google Play yet.

See what our server actually gets.

Type a note below. The left box is what your circle reads. The right box is what reaches us: the same note, locked with a key that was made in this page and never leaves it.

Your circle sees

Mia’s phone, just now

Our server stores

Locking…

Make a new key and every character changes.

This demo uses your browser’s own encryption so it can run on this page. The app does the same job on your phone with a well-known encryption library called libsodium.

We can’t see where you are

Your location, saved places, names, photos, messages and alerts are locked before they leave your phone. Only phones in your circle have the key.

An SOS looks like any other update

Every update is padded to the same size, so our server can’t tell an SOS from an ordinary check-in.

No email, phone number or password

Your account is a key made on your phone. You write down a recovery code, and that is how you get back in on a new phone.

No ads, trackers or analytics

There are no ads and no analytics tools in the app. If it crashes, you read the whole report and decide whether to send it.

What others can see

Maps come from Google, so Google sees which area your map shows, as with any map app. Your family’s live positions are never sent to Google. To name a stop in someone’s history, your phone asks Google (Android) or Apple (iPhone) about the area, rounded to about 110 metres.

What we still know

To deliver things we need some basics: which accounts are in which circle, which devices are yours, and when something was sent. The app lists all of it.

Everything the app does.

Grouped by what it is for, using the same names you will see in the app.

  • Labs Early. Off until you turn it on in Settings.
  • Testing Built and still being checked on real devices. Off until you turn it on.
  • Not yet available Built, but not switched on for anyone yet.

Privacy and trust

Everything is locked on your phone first. These are the controls on top of that.

  • End-to-end encryption

Locations, places, messages, photos and alerts are locked with a key that only your circle’s phones hold.

  • What we can see

A screen in the app that lists, in plain words, what our server can and can’t learn about you.

  • Who can see me

One list of everyone, in every circle, who can see your location, plus how many speed alerts people have set on you.

  • Precision

Choose for each circle how exactly you are shown, from your exact spot to an area about 10 km across. Keep it that way, or for 1, 3 or 8 hours.

  • See me exactly

Pick a few people who always get your exact position, whatever your precision is set to.

  • Check-ins only

Let a circle see moments instead of a trail: arrivals at saved places, check-ins, your answer when someone asks where you are, and SOS.

  • Safety number

Read a short code aloud with someone to check that nobody else is listening in.

  • Access report

See every device that can read what you send to a circle, and save the list as a report.

  • New devices wait to be let in

A new phone or browser can’t read a circle until a device already in it lets it in.

  • Warnings when something looks off

The app flags a location that doesn’t look right, a phone whose clock is wrong, or a second phone claiming to be someone.

  • Hide in app switcher

Blanks the app’s preview in your recent apps.

  • Crash reports, your choice

If the app crashes, it keeps a report on your phone. You read all of it, then send it, save it or delete it.

Live map

Where everyone is, how recent that is, and how to reach them.

  • Live family map

Everyone’s position with their battery, speed and when it last updated. People who are close together are grouped.

  • What they’re doing

Walking, running, cycling, driving or stopped, and which saved place they’re heading for, with a rough arrival time.

  • How far away

The distance and rough travel time from you to each person.

  • Follow and fit everyone

Keep one person in view as they move, or fit the whole circle on screen in one tap.

  • Map layers

Standard map or satellite, with traffic and a 3D view, in a light, dark or automatic style.

  • Refresh locations

Ask every phone in the circle for a fresh position. A phone the system has put to sleep may not answer straight away.

  • Ask where

Ask one person where they are. They can share once or tap Not now, and you aren’t told if they say no.

  • Honest about old positions

When a phone stops sending, the map says how long it has been instead of passing an old position off as current.

  • Find

A compass needle and the distance, pointing straight at someone. Handy in a crowd or a car park.

  • Navigate to them

Open directions to anyone in your usual maps app.

  • Travelling together

Two people in the same car show as one trip, not two dots on top of each other.

  • Member day

Every stay and trip in someone’s day as a timeline, with arrival and leaving times. Go back to earlier days too.

  • Activity

The last 24 hours of check-ins, arrivals, drives, battery and safety events. Filter by type and react with an emoji.

  • Low-battery alerts

The circle hears when someone’s phone is running low, before it dies.

  • My sharing schedule and quiet hours

Share only during the hours you pick, with different hours for each circle if you like. Arrivals, check-ins and SOS still get through.

  • Pause sharing

Stop sharing everywhere, or with just one circle.

  • Trust plan

Dated steps that give a child more privacy as they grow, for example showing only the neighbourhood in the evenings from a date you set.

  • Do not disturb

Everyday alerts arrive quietly. An SOS still sounds, and chat still works.

  • Morning digest

An optional summary of the night, sent around 7:30 am.

  • Delivery health

Checks permissions, battery settings and anything waiting to send, and shows where to fix it on phones that stop apps in the background.

  • Opens without signal

With no connection, the app opens to the last positions it had. The map also reopens where you left it.

Places and tasks

Home, school and work, known only to your circle.

  • Arrival and departure alerts

Save a place and set how close counts as arriving. Place names and locations are locked too, so we never learn where home is.

  • Save where you are

Save the spot you’re standing in with one tap.

  • Place suggestions

The app notices somewhere you go often and offers to save it.

  • Alerts for each person

Choose what you hear about each member: arrivals, departures, journeys, status, messages, wellbeing and speed alerts.

  • Place automations

When you or someone else arrives or leaves, check in, remind you, notify you or start Walk with me. It runs on your phone, not our server.

  • Share ETA

Send your arrival time at a saved place. Your phone works it out, with no outside route service.

  • Tasks

A job at a saved place, with a checklist and a person to do it. Someone taps “I’m on it” so nobody doubles up, and the circle can be nudged if nobody does.

  • When tasks remind you

A task reminds you when you reach its place. Choose any time, weekdays 9 to 6, or weekends.

  • Parking

Save where you parked, the level or bay and a meter countdown, then get the walk back.

Safety and SOS

For emergencies, and for getting home safely.

  • SOS

Hold the button to start a short countdown you can cancel. Your circle gets an alarm with your position, if your phone has one.

  • How an SOS sounds

It rings like an alarm. Your phone’s own Do Not Disturb settings still have the final say.

  • SOS from anywhere

Start one from a home-screen shortcut, a widget, the iPhone Action Button, the lock screen, your watch or Android Auto.

  • Practise the SOS

Hold it, watch the countdown, cancel it. Nothing is sent.

  • Respond to an SOS

Tell them you’ve seen it, get directions to them, and see when they mark themselves safe.

  • Check in

One tap to say you’re fine, with ready-made messages like On my way or Home safe, and an optional note.

  • Walk with me

Pick where you’re going and how long it should take. Your location is shared every 15 seconds. If you stop moving, or stop getting closer, for five minutes, the app asks if you’re OK and then sends an SOS.

  • Safety timer

A countdown with no destination, from your phone or watch. When it runs out, the phone asks if you’re OK. No answer in a minute sends an SOS.

  • Crash check

While you drive, the phone watches for a sudden stop. If it finds one it asks if you’re all right, and sends an SOS if nobody answers within a minute. It works from estimates, can miss a crash, and uses extra battery.

  • Nearby Labs

Notice when circle members are in the same room, over Bluetooth.

Map For Us is not an emergency service. An alert can be late or never arrive, for example with no signal or a flat battery. If someone is in danger, call your local emergency number.

Driving

Every drive on a map, and the habits behind it.

  • Drives

Picked up automatically and drawn in colours by speed, with stops, top speed, distance and time. Night drives are marked.

  • Drive events

Hard braking, rapid acceleration, quick starts, sharp turns and phone use while moving.

  • Driving score

A score out of 100 by day, week and month, with what cost points, the trend, streaks and tips. It is an estimate worked out on the phone, and drives without enough speed readings are not scored.

  • Weekly summary

This week’s drives and night drives compared with last week. Save it as a spreadsheet file (CSV).

  • Share or delete a drive

Send a drive to your circle, or delete it everywhere it was shared.

  • Speed alerts

Set a private limit for someone, from 40 to 120 km/h. Only you are told when they go over it, and they can’t see who set it.

  • Speed line

Your own number, not a speed limit. Stretches above it are marked in your drives.

  • Vehicle mode

A spare phone on the dashboard becomes the car in your circle, with a big, always-on screen.

Chat

A group chat for each circle and private chats with one person, locked like everything else.

  • Circle chat and private chats

End-to-end encrypted, with the same keys as your location. You can also message yourself.

  • Everything you expect

Reply, reply privately, edit, unsend, forward, copy, @mention, react and search.

  • Photos, voice notes and files

Photos in standard or HD, with captions. Voice notes, and documents up to 25 MB. Save any photo to your gallery.

  • View once

Send a photo, voice note or file that can be opened only once.

  • Disappearing messages

Set a chat to delete its messages after a time you choose.

  • Read receipts, your choice

Turn read receipts off if you prefer. Delivered ticks always show.

  • Chats tab

Every conversation in one list. Search by name or by what was said, mark a chat unread, or mute it.

  • Reply from the notification

Answer a message without opening the app.

  • Block and report

Block someone and their messages, photos and voice notes are hidden on your phone. They aren’t told. Report a message or a person to us in your own words, since we can’t read your chats.

Family care

For parents who live alone, and the people who look out for them.

  • Wellbeing

If a phone hasn’t moved for longer than you’d expect, the people you pick are told, one after another. Set when it counts as a concern and when it becomes an alarm, and quiet hours for the night.

  • Medication

Reminders once to four times a day, with Taken and Skip and a count of what is still due. Reminders are set a few days ahead, so open the app now and then.

  • Family pays

One person’s plan covers everyone in the circles they own. The people they invite don’t need a plan of their own.

  • Fall detection Testing

On a Wear OS watch only, and off unless you turn it on.

Circles and guests

As many circles as you need, each with its own key.

  • Many circles

Family, friends, a trip. Choose which ones get your location. Each circle is either Family or Team.

  • Invites

Send a link or show a QR code. Set when it expires, limit it to one person, note who it was for, and cancel it at any time.

  • Guest pass

Access that ends by itself, from one hour up to 30 days. Four hours is one tap. When it ends they see nothing new, though they keep what they already saw.

  • Event circles

A circle for a wedding or a trek that closes itself at the hour or on the day you choose.

  • Roles

Owner, member and limited. A limited member still shares their own location, but sees only the last 15 minutes of everyone else and can’t invite anyone.

  • Owner tools

Rename the circle, remove people, or hand ownership to someone else. Someone who is removed sees nothing new from then on.

  • Your name and photo

Any name you like, and a photo from your camera or gallery, locked like everything else.

  • Your own nicknames

Rename someone on your phone only. Nobody else sees it.

History

Your past stays on your phone, and you decide how long.

  • Your journal

A day-by-day record of your trips and stays, locked and kept on your phone. Search it or open any day.

  • Export

Save any month as a GPX file, which most map and fitness apps can open, or as a full data file (JSON).

  • Your year

Days recorded, journeys, the place you went most, your longest journey and furthest trip, worked out on your phone. Send it as a file.

  • History controls

Choose how long your phone keeps history, delete it from the phone, or remove what our server holds in every circle, now or automatically.

Work and teams Team plan

For care staff, cleaners, couriers, field engineers, shops and security teams.

  • Team circles

Choose Team when you create a circle and the Work tab appears. Roles become worker and contractor, and guests get a visitor pass.

  • Three-step setup

Invite the team, add a site, set shifts. There are starting points for care, cleaning, delivery, field service, retail and security.

  • Now

Who is at work, not in yet, needs attention or is off, with your own rules for late and no-show.

  • Shifts

Weekly and split shifts. Copy one person’s week to others, then publish. An hour-by-hour view shows gaps in cover.

  • My shift

Workers check in, take breaks, say they’re running late and ask for changes. They can see exactly what their manager sees.

  • Private off shift

Outside shift hours, the phone stops sharing its location continuously. Arrivals, check-ins and an SOS still go, and one position goes when someone asks where you are, unless you set that to Ask me first or Never.

  • Safety check-ins

Ask lone workers to check in every 30, 60 or 120 minutes. A missed check-in becomes an SOS.

  • Roll call

Ask everyone “are you OK?”, with an optional meeting point, and see who has answered.

  • Hours and reports

Time at sites (not hours worked), site visits and estimated mileage as spreadsheet files (CSV), and a client visit report for each site.

  • Reminders

Shift reminders, a daily wrap-up and a weekly summary.

  • Verified visits

The phone signs a receipt of a visit. Share it as a link anyone can check in a browser, with no account.

  • Handover

Two phones scan each other’s codes to record that they were together, for a pickup or a handover.

  • Team key

The team’s key changes whenever someone is removed, and a weekly reminder (which you can turn off) offers a fresh one.

  • Clock in from your wrist

Clock in and out from a watch.

Watch and car

The main buttons on your wrist and in your car.

  • Wear OS

SOS, check-in, send a status, share your ETA, safety timer, places, medication, tasks, Find, voice notes, refresh and clock in.

  • Wear OS on its own

Link the watch as its own device and it shares your location without your phone nearby. The watch needs a screen lock.

  • Apple Watch

Most of the same buttons, a watch-face complication and a check-in control.

  • Tiles and complications

Glanceable status on the watch face.

  • Meet-up and wrist voice notes

A needle on your watch to find someone in a crowd. It switches off after 30 minutes and the other person is told. Send voice notes instead of typing.

  • Android Auto

Places with directions, pickups, SOS, check-in and status messages. Messages can be read aloud if you turn that on.

  • Widgets

Who is where on your home screen, or one person large with their photo, place and time.

  • Lock screen

A walk, a shared ETA or an SOS stays on your lock screen while it runs, with buttons to stop it or send an SOS.

  • Siri shortcuts

On iPhone, ask Siri to share your ETA, tell your family you’re on your way, or start an SOS.

  • CarPlay Not yet available

Built, but it needs Apple’s permission before it can be switched on.

Make it yours

Colours, sounds and units the way you like them.

  • Twelve themes

Cognac Oak, Aurora, Midnight Gold, Racing Green, Lapis Navy, Velvet Damson, Burnt Copper, Arctic Teal, Matte Graphite, Crimson Reserve, Nordic Slate and Golden Olive.

  • Light, dark or system

Plus your own accent colour and a photo as the background.

  • Glass

Clear, balanced, frosted or solid panels.

  • Twelve app icons

Change the home-screen icon to match a theme.

  • Units and sounds

Kilometres or miles. Alerts use your phone’s own sounds, and an SOS rings like an alarm unless you change it.

  • Screen readers

Buttons and screens are labelled for VoiceOver and TalkBack.

  • Tablets

On a tablet, lists and details sit side by side.

On the web

The same app and the same encryption in a browser, for reading the map on a bigger screen.

  • Web app

Map, circles, chat and settings at www.mapforus.com.

  • Desktop layout

A wide map with a side rail, made for a big screen.

  • Link a browser

Scan a QR code with your phone and check that four words match on both screens.

  • Install it

Add it to your home screen or dock like an app. It opens to your last-known circles without a connection.

  • Streets on or off

Turn the street map off if you’d rather Google didn’t see which area you are viewing. Positions still show on a plain grid.

  • Verify a receipt

Anyone can check a signed visit or handover in their browser, with no account.

  • What a browser can’t do

It shares your location only while the tab is open, and it has no notifications or widgets. Use a phone to share your own location.

Your account

Nothing to remember except one code you write down.

  • Recovery code

Six groups of four characters that bring your account back on a new phone. Replace it whenever you like.

  • Linked browsers and devices

See every phone, watch and browser on your account. Remove one and the keys change, so it can’t read anything new.

  • App lock

Face, fingerprint or passcode, straight away or after one or five minutes. While it is locked, shortcuts and widgets can’t start an SOS.

  • Sign out

Your history stays on the phone, and signing back in on it takes one tap.

  • Delete your account

From the app, or on the web with your recovery code. Everything you sent is deleted. Circles you shared stay with the other members.

  • Help inside the app

Message us from Settings. Attach a diagnostics report with no locations or messages in it, and add an email address if you want copies of our replies.

Monthly and yearly family plans will start with a 7-day free trial, one per Apple or Google account. Cancel before it ends and you won’t be charged. Two- and three-year plans are paid upfront and don’t renew. Team is monthly or yearly, with no trial.

You will buy plans in the App Store or Google Play, in your own currency. Family prices include tax, except in the US and Canada, where tax is added when you pay. Team prices don’t include tax.

The person who owns a circle pays, and everyone they invite to it is covered. A guest counts as one of the people while their pass lasts.

Common questions.

Straight answers, including what the app can’t do.

Can you see where I am?

No. Your phone locks your location before sending it, and only phones in your circle have the key. Our server stores it but can’t open it. To deliver things it does need some basics: which accounts are in which circle, which devices are yours, and when something was sent. The “What we can see” screen in the app lists all of it.

Does anyone else see anything?

The map pictures come from Google Maps, so Google sees which area your map is showing, as with any map app. Your family’s live positions are never sent to Google. When you open someone’s day or a drive, your phone asks Google (on Android) or Apple (on iPhone) for the street name of each stop’s area, rounded to about 110 metres, once per area. Notifications travel through Apple and Google, who can see that one was sent to your phone, but not what it says.

Do I need an email address or phone number?

No. Your account is a key made on your phone, and you choose the name other people see. You get a recovery code of six groups of four characters. Write it down somewhere safe.

What happens if I lose my phone?

Put the app on a new phone and type your recovery code, or link the new phone from another device that is still signed in. Then remove the lost phone from your account. If you lose your recovery code and every device, nobody can get the account back, including us. That is the price of us not holding your keys.

What does the app need on my phone?

To share while it is in the background, location needs to be set to “Allow all the time” on Android or “Always” on iPhone, with precise location on. It also asks for notifications and physical activity, which it uses to tell walking from driving. On Android, set battery use to Unrestricted. The app takes you through each one before you join a circle.

Does it keep working when the app is closed?

It is built to, but phone makers treat background apps differently and some stop them to save battery. The Delivery health screen shows whether your phone is sending and what to change if it isn’t. If a phone goes quiet, the map shows how long ago it last updated.

Will it drain my battery?

Sharing your location in the background uses some battery, and Walk with me and crash check use more while they are running. How much depends a lot on the phone, so we don’t quote a figure.

Can someone watch me without me knowing?

Everyone in a circle can see everyone else in it, and “Who can see me” lists every person who can see you. You can lower your precision, share check-ins only, set quiet hours or pause. The one thing kept private is who set a speed alert on you, though you can see how many there are.

If I remove someone, what can they still see?

From that moment they get nothing new. Anything they already saw stays on their phone, and no app can take that back. The same goes for a guest whose pass ends, or someone who leaves.

Can my child use it?

Yes, through your invite. Under-18s should only join through a parent’s or guardian’s invite. A trust plan lets you give them more privacy as they get older.

Is it an emergency service?

No. SOS, crash check and fall detection are alerts sent from a phone, and they can be late or never arrive, for example with no signal or a flat battery. If someone is in danger, call your local emergency number.

Can I use it on a computer?

Yes, at www.mapforus.com, linked to your phone with a QR code. A browser only shares your location while the tab is open and can’t show notifications, so keep using a phone to share your own location.

Which languages does it support?

English for now. Dates and times follow your phone’s settings, and you can choose kilometres or miles.

When can I sign up?

New sign-ups are paused while we test. The Android and iPhone apps are not in the stores yet and plans are not on sale. If you already have an account, you can sign in on the web.
